Tallahassee now has a Community Garden Network Committee

Dear Community Gardener,

Sustainable Tallahassee, working in conjunction with the Leon County Office of Resource Stewardship and the IFAS-Leon County Cooperative Extension, is pleased to announce the formation of a Community Garden Network committee, whose purpose is to assist in supporting and enhancing the community gardening efforts at schools, community centers, organizations, neighborhoods, etc in Tallahassee and Leon County. As you may know, at the end of the Sustainability Summit hosted by Leon County last January, attendees identified and ranked initiatives they felt were important in promoting sustainability in our community.  Two of the top five initiatives were to “create a county-wide network of associations to promote and develop community gardens” and to “establish a community garden land trust to obtain property for garden projects.”

Some of the objectives of this Sustainable Tallahassee committee are: to increase the number of community gardens in existing neighborhoods and schools; to encourage the placement of community gardens in new developments; to increase the likelihood of successful outcomes from community gardens; and to form a community garden land trust to assist community gardeners in acquiring and/or purchasing land for their gardening efforts.

We invite you to aid in the creation of this network by representing your garden at a meeting to be held at First Presbyterian Church at 110 North Adams Street, 32301 on September 15, 2015 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. If you are unable to attend this meeting or are no longer the point of contact for your garden, please identify an alternate we can contact to represent your gardeners. You are invited to this meeting alongside representatives of more than 20 community gardens in the Leon County/Tallahassee area.

We are interested in hearing about the history of your gardening efforts, your successes and failures, areas where financial  or technical assistance might be needed, and most importantly your plans for improving and enhancing your garden’s future success in order to provide and develop resources to effectively address your needs.

We look forward to meeting you in September and working with you to enhance your gardening efforts.

Sincerely,

Jim Davis, Executive Director, Sustainable Tallahassee

Yvonne Gsteiger, Board Member, Sustainable Tallahassee
